Before the price: what to do if you smell gas
Leave the building first, go at least 100 feet away, then call 911 or BGE at 877.778.7798 from where you are standing. BGE's instruction is to get out before calling, and its three "don'ts" are explicit: don't turn anything off, don't open a window, don't try to find the leak. Its brochure adds not to use matches or to turn anything on or off, "even a cell phone."
BGE answers emergency gas calls 24 hours a day and charges nothing to investigate one. Do not assume a neighbour has already called, and do not go back inside until authorities say it is safe. A house with no gas appliances can still have a gas leak from outdoors.

What does it cost to find a gas leak?
Finding a gas leak is billed as a pressure test or an inspection, not as a separate detection service. Angi (Mar 2026) puts a gas line pressure test at $75 to $150, and HomeAdvisor (Jun 2026) puts a yearly gas line inspection at $50 to $75. No major cost publisher prices gas leak detection the way it prices water leak detection.
The fuel gas code sets how the test is done: a pressure test of at least 3 psig held for at least 10 minutes in a single-family dwelling, with leaks located using an approved gas detector or a non-corrosive leak detection fluid. Household soap solutions are not a substitute — CSST manufacturer Gastite warns that they contain chlorides and that only a solution labelled non-corrosive should be used on its tubing.
When a repair becomes a replacement
Replacing gas pipe costs $23 to $35 per foot, and a whole house runs $3,000 to $8,000, according to Fixr (Aug 2025). Fixr (Aug 2025)'s per-foot figure includes removing the old line as well as installing the new one, so it is not comparable to a new-installation rate of $15 to $30 per foot.
Corrosion is what usually forces the decision on a buried line. BGE tells customers that piping after the meter is theirs to maintain and that "if such piping is not maintained, it may corrode and become a potential source for a leak." The code takes the same view: zinc coating "shall not be deemed adequate protection for underground gas piping," so buried steel needs corrosion-resistant material, a factory-applied coating or monitored cathodic protection.

The line from the street is not on this bill
BGE owns the gas pipe up to and including the meter; you own everything after it. BGE's own wording is "BGE owns all pipes, underground and above ground, up to and including the gas meter," and "customers own and maintain all above ground and buried pipe after the meter, and their gas appliances."
That line decides who pays. BGE investigates a reported gas odor free of charge, makes the area safe and repairs BGE's equipment at no cost. But if the leak turns out to be on customer-owned equipment, BGE may shut the gas off to make the property safe, and the inspection and repair become yours. None of the $271 to $936 installation figures on this page cover running gas from the street to the meter — that is BGE's service line, quoted by BGE, on a different basis.
Baltimore County's code says the same thing from the other direction: the utility service, the main shutoff valve, the regulator and the meter sit outside the scope of the code a plumber works to.
Costs a gas quote may leave out
- Permit. HomeAdvisor (Jun 2026) puts permit fees at $100 to $300 nationally. In Baltimore City the fee for gas piping in a 1- or 2-family home is $25, and a permit is issued only to a City-licensed master plumber, master gas fitter or on-site utility contractor.
- Pressure test after the repair. The code requires the affected portion to be repaired or replaced and retested. Angi (Mar 2026) puts a test at $75 to $150.
- Shut-off valve. Replacing a gas shut-off valve averages $300 to $600, according to Fixr (Aug 2025), with the valve itself $150 to $350 of that.
- After-hours premium. Fixr (Aug 2025) notes an extra $200 to $300 per visit for emergency same-day service. Speedy Plumbing Baltimore does not add one.
- Excavation and restoration. Trenching runs $5 to $12 per foot, and the $1,500 to $5,000 buried-line figure covers landscaping as well as digging.
Why a gas quote is never the cheapest quote
Maryland law requires a licence to work on gas piping, and the do-it-yourself exception does not cover it. The statute's exception for work in your own residence applies to plumbing services only; natural gas services are excluded from it. Providing natural gas services without a Board licence is not permitted, and a business needs a master natural gas fitter who actively directs and is responsible for the work.
Baltimore County is a separate system: the State Board's own page says licences are required statewide "except for Baltimore County and the areas served by the Washington Suburban Sanitary Committee," which "issue their own licenses and have their own plumbing code." In the County, only a County-licensed plumbing or gasfitting contractor can pull a gasfitting permit.
